I'm wanting to go to a carbed 5.3 with a T56 tranny. My cousin has an LT1 T56 that's been checked and is good to go that I can get dirt cheap. I've researched using Gen I style trannys on an LS and also using a Gen II T56 on an LS. I've seen a few guys mention you have to get a LS1 T56 bell and input shaft when using the LT1 tranny. there are a lot of places that salvage LT1, LT4 and LS1 motors. Do a quick search on Google or one of those search engines and you'll find a lot of resources. Ebay usually has a lot of LT1 parts for auction, too. Oh and as a warning, those outer brackets you mentioned are expensive. Look in Chevy High Performance or Car Craft.
